Sliding Stability Assessment of Concrete Dams Using a 3D Discontinuum Hydromechanical Model Following a Discrete Crack Approach

Evaluation of the sliding stability concrete dams requires use numerical tools not only able to simulate coupled hydromechanical behavior but also adequately represent foundation discontinuities and specific features dam foundations. The formulation a three-dimensional (3D) small displacement finite element model based on interface elements is presented. In this model, hydraulic simulated assuming that water flow occurs along channels located at edges triangular discontinuities. used perform analysis large arch-gravity assess safety against base sliding, different constitutive models dam/foundation two approaches: (i) strength reduction method (ii) amplification hydrostatic pressure, an increase in reservoir level. present study shows consistent results are obtained with proposed should preferably be carried out using increasing pressure corresponding uplift pressures, as methodology leads significantly lower factors.
